Mammograms help in the early detection of breast cancer as they can detect breast cancer before any signs or symptoms appear. Mammograms have been shown to be an important factor in reducing the risk of dying from breast cancer.

Mammograms also help determine a diagnosis, such as verifying symptoms or unusual findings on another imaging test.

Types of mammograms

Mammograms are categorized into two main types: Routine screening and diagnostic screening.

Routine Breast Exam – Mammogram

This type of screening is used annually during regular check-ups, for early detection of breast cancer in women who do not have any health issues and are asymptomatic.

Diagnostic Testing – Mammogram

This type of test is accurate and can help detect the causes of changes in breast tissue in women with symptoms such as:

Feeling a lump in the breast

Breast size and shape changes

Abnormal skin appearance

Thickening the nipple

Or when the results of a routine mammogram are abnormal

This type of test is more time-consuming than a routine test.

Important tips before getting a mammogram

Avoid using cosmetics on the breast before the exam.

Avoid using deodorant or powders on the area around the breast.

Easy-to-remove clothing is preferred.

How a mammogram is performed

The mammogram is performed using a mammogram machine, where the examination is performed in a standing position or with the patient seated, depending on the type of scanner used.

The following steps are followed:

The patient is prepared by being provided with a special gown from the hospital and asked to remove any jewelry worn on the neck, and to remove clothing that covers the upper body.

One breast is placed on a contoured, flat plate and gently, firmly pressed against another plate placed over the breast. The plates flatten and stabilize the breast to achieve an accurate mammogram. The pressure is held for a few seconds without causing any discomfort or pain in the breast.

Repeat for the other breast. Next, the plates of the machine are tilted to take a side view of each breast. In this way, the process is completed by taking two images of each breast in different positions, for a total of four images.

Photos are reviewed by the assistant as soon as they are taken to make sure the images are clear and there is no need to take another photo.

The procedure takes less than 30 minutes. Afterward, you can return to your daily activities as normal.

Is a mammogram painful?

Some pressure during the exam can cause discomfort, but the pain should be minimal and short-lived.

Mammogram Results

These digital images are displayed on a computer screen, where a radiologist examines and interprets them and issues a report on the results.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-12672399 "

Breast mammogram damage

Breast mammogram harms are rare and usually do not outweigh the medical benefits.

In the end, remember
